Money can buy a lot of things but family is not one of them.

By all accounts, Brandi Valencia had all of the advantages coming into the world. Her mother, Heather, was fortunate enough to marry the Terrance Underwood whom controlled the commercial real estate market for a good portion of southern California. Brandi was supposed to be their pride and join, a bubbly baby girl to complete the picture perfect family and to show off when she got older after enrolling her in various activities that would shape her into a young lady worthy of the society she was born into. When Brandi was four, her mother caught her father with his pants down with his mistress and was furious especially when the mistress in question had nothing to lose and outed multiple affairs of Terrance's to Heather and that everyone who was everyone knew what was going on behind closed doors. Heather was a woman scorned that had to save face and luckily for her, their prenuptial agreement included a helpful "no cheating" clause. So she hired the best lawyer that money could buy, took her confused four year old daughter to live in a condo, and won enough money to keep the family afloat until the next man came into the picture. Of course, Terrance had been a better father than husband albeit strict and absent and the right thing to do was to share custody of young Brandi with her disgraced ex-husband.

The divorced marked what would be the start of instability in Brandi's life. Shuffled from house to house, a revolving door of step parents and step siblings that came in and out of her life, all while putting on a smile and acting like everything was just dandy. She may have been young but she looked at the families around her, particularly her cousin's and her classmates and knew this wasn't "normal". With little to no parental attention, it didn't take long for Brandi to learn that she could practically get away with murder as long as she didn't tarnish the family reputation - of course, being an elementary and middle school student, there wasn't that much trouble that she could get into with her friends. Unlike some of her peers, Brandi didn't bury herself in her studies or activities and felt contempt towards being paraded around like some sort of show pony. Her grades were average while her test scores showed that if only she would apply herself, she could have above average grades. Then there was the country club incident where Brandi nearly broke her tennis instructor's nose - whether or not she was deliberately aiming to do that is forever up for debate.

In eighth grade, the tide turned in her favor. Two marriages later, Heather had met Carlos Valencia a man who was warm and paternal. His own children were grown and out of the house and he took on the role of father figure to Brandi who at the time was not speaking to her own father after her step monster had accused her of stealing a very important piece of jewelry with her father taking his wife's side. Carlos was the father that Brandi had always dreamed of, the one she wanted her own to act like but Carlos worked and traveled a lot. By the time she was in eleventh grade, her mother and Carlos split because her mother had felt second place to Carlos' work. Brandi never quite forgave her mother for that, even if she's stayed in contact with Carlos since then.

Junior year was where it all went to hell for Brandi. After Carlos signed the divorce papers and left her and her mother the house; the conflict between her and Heather worsened as Heather started dating again and Brandi was often shuffled to her father's house to stay. The silver lining about that was that her father traveled a lot and she was free to throw parties as she pleased. The neighbors lodged many noise complaints and after Brandi's "friends" had trashed the sprawling pool, Brandi was no longer welcome at her father's house. She was kicked out of one school after the first semester of her junior year after getting into a fight with one of her female classmates - to be fair, the girl had publicly berated Brandi and accused Brandi's mother of ruining her parents' marriage and Brandi defended herself but her record spoke for itself. She was onto her next private school and one suspensions too many had her mother pulling her hair out and ready to kick Brandi out. Brandi pleaded with her mom to let her live with Carlos but Carlos was always away on business. Besides, her mother had another plan: send Brandi to live with her aunt in Huntington Beach for her senior year.

Brandi adjusted well to living with her aunt and for the first time in her life, actually wasn't waiting for the other shoe to drop. It wasn't the cure all that got Brandi to turn over a completely new leaf but suspensions were traded for the occasional detention and she actually obeyed (most) of the rules her aunt laid out for her. Her grades went up enough to please her aunt and she got an after school job at a local salon. However, Brandi was still aimless and had no intentions of attending community college as a stepping stone to a four year with the grades she had. Nor was there a university that mommy and daddy could buy her way into. When she announced to her mother and father that she wasn't going to college, Brandi was left to fend for herself with odd jobs.

In typical Brandi fashion, she's survived so far. A guy she was dating got her into dealing weed and while the guy is no longer, Brandi has a reliable customer base and refuses to sell anything stronger. She's biding her time until her 25th birthday when her trust fund kicks in at the MAC counter all while living with a roommate in Huntington Beach. This time around, Brandi has family in her aunt and cousins and occassionally her former step father - one of the few things that money can't buy.

misc ยป born Brandi Underwood, Brandi changed her last name in honor of her step father for her 18th birthday and cut the cord between herself and her biological father seemingly for good. She's still in the will and he still has a trust fund for her waiting but they barely talk.
